W. Negus visited animal "farm" run by woman. In smelly yard many wood &
wire cages including 200+ mynahs, 500+ finches, howlidle, other birds; lutins,
corgs, civets, 200+ stump tailed macaques, 50+ pig tails + rhinos & M. trios,
20+ gibbons, a few langurs, & others. Overcrowded, & a few dead in
cages, but much help in cleaning & feeding animals. Many adult tarsiers
& pigtales. Most ads. 1 or 2 to small cage. Beats lot buys here +
thunder some of better about 50 T upsia in single cage, most hiding under
escalina on floor. | On Dec. 11 (Saturday) morning visited market
place in Bangkok. Included many live animals for sale: 10+ small
gibbon, Presbytis, mouse deer, tree squirrels, Tupasia, flying squirrel,
parrots, corsetoors, civets, and others - apparently no restriction on
this traffic, & many animals in poor condition. | All Americans say that
gibbons taken by killing mother, almost exclusively. | A student,
Miss Bertrand (French), studying Macaca speciosa in the field in 5. Their
land, in area where they come to feed on rice crops.
14 December 1965. W. Dr. Negus, Peter Merkel, & others, visited
island of 200+ acres off coast S. of Pattaya, about 2 1/2 hrs.
drive + 3/4 hrs. boat ride. Long sand beaches, coconut lined, &
clear blue tropical water or mainland; much level. for
tourists & water skiers. Island about 70' high, nearly solidly
covered w. shrubs & trees, some to 80'. In boats lod- Delta
private center arrangement, hoped to establish colony of gibbons
here. I think island suitable, tho a little dry & trees shorter
than usual gibbon habitat. About 1/4 mile offshore near Thai
naval training school; pleasant area. Many more islands
in the general area - single rocks to 1000 acres +.
