C. Koford 36 Journal 1 December 1965 Kenplains Est., ATHI River nr Nairobi, Kenya David Harperft showed us 10 acre + 150 acre pens for holding gazelles. 10 acre 6 in pen had been killed by jackals (?) in i night. Now trying to catch more in big net corral. We saw loose band 30+ giraffe, 4 more than the 25 eland on ranch. David now & more along in proposed study (NSF-sponsored) of tommy's - cattle competition, tho he seems to know little further animal or range, on 3 yrs. $60,000 NSF project (Cornell). 2 December 1965. Departed Nairobi about 4 p.m. on Air India to Bombay. On to Bangkok Dec. 4: 4 December 1965. Arrived Bangkok. Went to end of ICZN meetings at K. Univ. Departed on bus for field trip to Khao Yai Natl Park. Returned to Bangkok on Dec. 6. Heard gibbon calling in park, esp. in morning, but saw none. 7-11 December 1965. Visited Dr. J. T. Marshall at Seato med. res. lab. Also Dr. N. Negus, working on Tupaia and Hylobates reptrod. Saw tupai colony in small cages; about 50 raised so far, some with 7 left in cage (2 nest boxes). Animals larger than the T. glis we have in P.R. from Kuala Lumpur. Visited malaria research stn. at Pue Buddhkot, about 2 hrs. from Bangkok. 15+ gibbons in large cages. No reptrod. yet. Said have succeeded in infecting splenectomized gibbons w/ P. falciparum (several people at stn have had malaria). Small tent & nice small facilities. Visitas + talks with J. L. Harrison, Univ. Singapore, and W. Elliott MacLure, bird man of SE Asia pathology project. 12 December 1965. Visited w. Marshall the open billed stork colony up a river near Bangkok. Some storks mounting; 1 to 3 eggs in some nests; some carry twigs + greenery to nests. Same birds, ideal for obs. Saw 14 monitor near same river.
