C. Koford 34 Journal 7 November 1965 Kibale Forest, Toro, Uganda Sunday. Rain midday again (.75"?). Eve road census. Near K-8 sign saw 2 grey parrots (red tails) in green Erythrina tree; cut off some leaves. 8 November 1965. Departed 9 a.m. & drove to Kampala; camped Entebbe. 9 November 1965. Found mail 3 days for Kenya via. Visited Melusine. 10 November 1965. Visited office of Conservator of Forests (Alastair Smith), Entebbe. 11 November 1965. To Mengo to study site in forest N. of Lugazi w/ Neil Cholmondeley, Denny, & others. 12 November 1965. Returned to Kampala. Sat w/ him. Departed for Kenya. 13 November 1965. Drove to near Mairu & visited Richard Leithen, settle his ranches. Camped on Mairu River (15' wide) where thornbush strip of riverine forest 100+ yds. wide containing colobus & blue monkeys. About 6000 ft., cool, semi-arid. Large figs common. Windy (or oobi?) 14 November 1965. Sunday. Shot pigeons. Saw 2 steinbecks in cattle areas. Heard colobus at night. Counted monkeys. Saw guinea fowl and rock hyraxes near Leithen's house on Mairu River. Windy still. 15 November 1965. To Mairu, talked with local people. Pleasant English community of 20 or so adult white. 16 November 1965. Drove via Eloret to Nakuru. Saw the few million flamingoes on Lake Nakuru; we can drive within 100 yds. of the birds at many spots. No visible wardens. Rain midday; Aberdare & Mt. Kenya in clouds. Drove on to Thompson Falls, then toward Nanyuki through thorn bush cattle country. Saw 2 jackals (camped). 17 November 1965. On to Nanyuki. Rain midday. Streams high & muddy; roads muddy. We went out in Land rover with Peter Merriman-Jones, young professional hunter. He was to shoot eland & zebra damaging crops along road toward Isiolo. He but hunted in grassland w. scattering eucalyptus & other trees,
