23 October 1965 N. Mt Kadom, Karawoja, Uganda.
and a tiny (3"x6"seat?) 3-legged stool in my hand. Some mount
ain ornament, tribal manner, skin clothing - rather primitive, only
60 mi. from Mbale. | Road close to mt. on N. side. Scattered trees
down slopes, & forest patches on higher slopes, but mostly cliffs,
many vertical - fascinating but difficult mountain.|Returned
to Mbale & drove on to camp 20 miles toward Jinja from Molo,
in small forest of 50' trees. Hard rain late afternoon.
Sunday
24 October 1965, Sunshine & broken clouds. A group of 7 men
coden w. rope nets, sticks, spears, walked by our camp - poach-
ers? or monkey trappers? Marleys probably here, tho saw none.
Many bird cells - turacos, hornbills. | An area on Kadom, many
sattle, mostly white zulus w. riles prominent, herded by robed black
dogp. Cuphobia tree some sites. Saw no game outside of preserves.
25 October 1965. Drove to Kampala. Camped Entebbe.
Entebbe, Uganda
25 October 1965. Visited F.R. Mann of Verrets (E.A.), monkey
collecting company. Formerly operated in Kenya (Nairobi). Ships
mostly vervete (to 600/mo.), but has some Brazzees, redtails, in
cages. Ruts injured & some speese on small offshore island near
airport. Has 10+ fish cages in cage. Helped Dr. Vickers of Zedele
make a film in Kenya, Willing to collect special material. Says white
dute tails of others & selus, injure selves if cage too large.
Ships to Berlin (Germany), Stockholm, Japan mostly; also to
USSR & U.S. drug cos. Operator by setting up camps, shows
locals (to 200) how to make box traps of sticks or wire,
pays 5 sh. each for marleys. Vervete caught w. wid box
traps, not nets. Friendly, German, about 55 yrs. |At Kampala]
