18 October 1965. Kapkwata, Mt. Eloon, Schei, a steep in parts; barely made it in sta wagon w. load. Pines + cypres planted to sapling size on many acer (100+?). Walked to "fire tower" + saw + heard monkeys from there. Fine views of forested slopes.
19 October 1965. Rain all day, but stopped mid-afternoon. Then to "fire tower," a 150' rock outcrop at upslope and plantation, + counted monks.
20 October 1965. Overcast but no rain. 0930 to 1 p.m. stop Fire Tower, counting colobus. Rain about 2 pm.
21 October 1965. Spent afternoon in area of fire tower. A trail starts there + goes about 5 mi. into forest to W + NW; I followed it ½ hr., then 30-50'trees occurred small grassy openings. From near tower saw sleek "raven" with broad tail, short tail, + feathered naces. Sent men by bicycle to Bulera for gasoline. Little rain night.
22 October 1965. D.F.O. arrived & sold me petrol. Broken clouds today; dryest yet. Drove to Mbale, 65 mi., without difficulty. Later drove via Serro toward Moroto about 40 miles, into dryish than lush area & camped. Many deer, bird flocks. Heard lion at night to N.
23 October 1965. Drove N. across Mbale River into Delosien game preserve. Buffaloes fairly common near road; saw 3-4 yrs. To 11, w. giras. Eat delicately at the 10-15'tall spindly thorny tree (w. ants + galls numerous). Plains not open but have trees 5-20 meter apart. Also saw hartibest, oryx, zebra spring tree. Some rocky hills w. caves & bird lined holes. Then through village of Namulus, near cotton estate. Villagers very black, women w. bare breasts + many metal neckrings. Men naked largely, esp. in guitsle, + nearly all boys naked. Men carry walking stick
