C. Koford 24 Journal W. Uganda 31 August 1965. Toro Game Preserve, nr. Ft. Portal, green plains with riverine forest + scattered tree. Large nos. holo, but also waterbuck, leangani, elephant, + many duffels (one dead 200+). Hunting allowed under permit + payment. We saw blind at red territorial ground when H. Burch. was walked. Giant ground hornbill striking, feeding on ground in open. A few redbuck in holo groups; leangani with Defassa waterbuck. A few wart-hogs. At night heard too hyenaes close, lion far. Thirsted but did not rain. Few inhabitants, go not overgrazed, + very pleasant area to work, tho muggy at times. Pridham took us game walking day 1. 1 September 1965. Pridham took us on tour of much of area. No ostrich, rhino, giraffe, bee. Kob most abundant. Lemurs in gift at one occasionally. Saw colobus monkeys in riverine trees near Waza Camp, + heard calls in evening. Baboons + quivers said to be present. 2 September 1965. We drove about 12 miles to edge of Lake Albert, threw large outboard motor boat, + went fishing (trolling) for pike perch. Caught but 1, about 2 lbs. Rocky escarpments + spectacular falls near south Nile River. From boat saw 3 bands vervets + 2 bands (3 to 6) Colobus dyspinnis in broadleaf tree along sloping shore. Also 1 dead hippo, many fish eagles, 2' lizards, kingfishers, pelicans, small birds. Water muddy; level had risen 20+ ft. during last few years, Pridham said. No other live fishermen seen. Departed boat landing about 2 pm; car trouble delayed return to camp. Kofod family stayed overnight, while others returned to Ft.P. in evening.
