C. Koford 22 Journal (Sabitoli; Kibale Forest) 20 August 1965. Nri Ft. Portal, Uganda. In morning watched Colobus alyx. + redtail nr. Kigami Estate. Heavy rain 4-6 p.m. To turn for gasoline. 23 August 1965. In morning watched monkeys nr. Kigami Estate. Then to dam road 1 mi. to Elephant Control Path, walked to Mpanga R. and 1/2 mile up st. River muddy now, brown-grey. Shopped in Ft. Portal! Cercop. lhoesti - about 12:30 shot way N. of Budham jet, 3 monkeys ran to E. across road. We heard grunts in bush within 5 yds. yfss, + saw bush move, + finally sounds of running off, but not jump trees. Carla K. said saw [prob. = C. l'hoesti] one; black w. brown social; chirp? or red colobus? / Forest guard said chimps recently seen in area Kampala Rd. just E. of county line; sometimes crossing road. / Stayed Sabitoli. 24 August 1965. Observed in Kibale Forest on road 5. from Sabitoli, until (r. 9 mi. W. of Mpanga-Kanyowara rd. jet) stopped by mud. Saw swinging group, tan; black thumb-sized c badige mammal run across road (gorilla?) nr. Njugaburria crossing. Saw bumbills, twoos, in patch mature forest E. of Kanyowara; dart reached by dirt road for about 8 mi. SSE of Ft. Portal then 3 mi. E. blue, redtail & brow colobus in forest. / Rain now + again, light, t: 30pm. Nearly clear 9 a.m. but overcast noon. / Trees in flower - Dry- thinia scapinosa, bright red, leafless. (Sunbirds feed). Also Apothodes, red flowers, w. leaves. Some trees w. yellow flowers too. But generally few flowers. / In Kanyowara forest saw from colin too. Return to Sabitoli for night. 25 August 1965. We left Ft. Portal 11:15 and drove via Karase to Queen Elizabeth Nat. Park. Talked w. Chief Wardon, I.S. Ross. Saw usual game - elephant, hippo, kol, waterbuck, warthogs, + other, and St. hyenas about 7:30 p.m. on Royal Circuit. Stayed
