Kampala, Uganda
Motor or repurchase deal. Sent Japan budget request to Delta.
Ft. Portal
20 August 1965. Departed 09/15 for Kampala, via Mulondo. Bond
road ended long before Mulondo; then after Godingy. Patches of trees
but country broken up by crops, burning, bananas, can. A
long gas drive, about 206 km mi. Met Shiniye in his store (source
of local info. & goods). Stayed Hot Spring Hotel. Barter, 2 modern
hotels, adequate imported food here.
21 August 1965. Saturday. To the central office bld. mrs. nts. of
Moon Hotel. Met Kingston, the DFO, + Peter Hay, Game Despt. head.
Both friendly Englishmen. Buss & Wing from Billman had been
there not long ago. I with Kingston took drive to Kalo Forest via
Kages Sawmill S. & E. to Mbaraga R. bridge, then W. to Kangy-
ware. No old motive forest, but some recent, some being cut, + some
dense areas of elephant grass. Kingston gave permission to camp at
Schitoli a Kangyware forest station. We went to former, where a small
house available (no utilities). I visited Bill Billman at Kejani
tea estate, where he had been since 1932. He was friendly, formerly of
Game Dept, + knew animals fairly well. We saw 2 or 3 gas.
cobolus, + had them, in forest looking his tea field. I Billman
said forest much disturbed now by poisoning of some trees, & log
cutting. Elephants few now, tho we saw recent carcass on our road.
Hippo seen from Mbaraga R. Guinea fowl & francolin in forest.
About 6 sp. monkeys, incl. some chimpanzees, B. said. Rainy season
starting, tho not so sharp change as no. Mbarara to S. I how
mostly white hornbill (Bycanistes ?), pr. Francolinus. I Met mine gal-
Mod. rain 5-6 p.m.
oyst, Stellaris, Meigyan. Saw some blue & red tailed monkeys.
