C. Kofurd 20 Journal 12 August 1965 Mr. Nairobi, Kenya talk glowingly of Jane Goodall & her continuing (?) studies of chimps m. Kigoro. Lesley in good health & humor, talkative; I was impressed w. his broad interests & knowledge. | Coffee & tea growing nr. Nairobi. 13 August 1965. Spent about 2 hrs. in late afternoon in Nairobi Nall Park, 10 miles from Nairobi. Mostly grass plains or rolling; some wooded areas. Saw gazelle, Thomson's g., hartebeest, quass, wast leg, giraffe (1 seen only), eland (1 seen only; nr. giraffes - climb on cars; only 1 troop?), hippos (4 in 1 pool), vultus (nr. hippo pool), marshies. Ostrich fairly common; or ? salve, a mostly. Dunica fowl flock; from- olive & bustard in pairs | Probably some regulation of numbers though seasonal. Hedged tree & shrubs, but no severe over- grazing. One jackal seen; it rolled in (dung urine ?). 14 August 1965. Departed 0915 by train for Kampala, a 24 hr. ride, going across Rift Valley & over 9,100 ft. level. Cattle, cornfields, planted eucalyptus & pine & other conifers, patcher forest, occas. native towns. Drive across Rift Valley, & 2-3 large lakes seen. Few birds seen, & no wild mammals. 15 August 1965. Sunday. Arrived Kampala. To Makere Univ. Coll. & met Dr. Jane Thornton, & John T. Powell, Owen, & others. Dr. Delaney in Rd. dept. Stayed at Chris' guest house. | Climate [?] warm & muggy; Puerto Rico- like. Pesto (fruit) said to hang in eucalyptus at same seasons. 16 - 18 Aug. 1965. Business & shopping in Kampala. 19 Aug. 1965.
