6 August 1965.
Dehra Dun, U.P., India
other groups during day, in about 6 hours of walking trails.
Many birds - leafwings, babblers, barbet, jungle fowl (bad
only), peafowl, & colorful small birds. Stayed at shack
near dhola bingolaw. L. said he had seen chital, leopard, wild
pig in area, & a tiger once briefly. Lindley spent a few month
in U.P. with Phyllis Joy in roadside surveys of monkeys & search
for good study area. Now basis to make ecological & behavioral
studies in single area.
7 August 1965. Spent day in field w. Lindley, & saw large
band of macaques in Sal forest - perhaps 60 in groups, tho I
classure of only 20, mostly minors. Mushrooms being eaten
avidly. Saw 3+ pygmy owls, some apparently young, in
forest. The afternoon drove thru Dehra Dun (unattractive)
to grounds of Forest Institute (imposing; huge park-like grounds),
where there were some rhesus groups, & we saw one group
of 20+ which readily came to food thrown on edge road. We
drove sev'l miles out to area of Tendli (sp.? ) block, then re-
turned. Sal (Shorea) about 70-? 70 ft. high dominant in all
the forest patches. No rain all day; occas. clouds.
8 August 1965. Spent morning looking for monkeys; saw
no rhesus. In evening departed by train for Delhi. No rain.
9 August 1965. In Delhi, visited Vita Pvt. Ltd. and their
monkey farm near Ring Road. Little change from my 1962
visit. Mostly 4 - 8 lb. animals in gang cages. Adults,
14+ lbs., mostly very old ?? (10 yrs. or +), some almost
decrepit, and adult 07 07 too (largest 23 lbs.) looked like
