C. Koford 15 Journal 20 July 1965. Shimokita, Aomori, Japan rock (some bedlands - like), w. some columnar structure. yukuri had road. Visited Osamu Mori (F. Jr. High Sch., sai-mura), amateur botanist. He knew Japanese names of plants well, but not scientific names. I bought 12 leaf specimens which he identified rapidly, & located in the flora book. Azuma said a troop of 30+ to north of Fukuri. 21 July 1965. Windy night; 14 1/2 C. at 7 a.m. Yesterday @ 4-6 desegisted most trees, & marked w. tags, for phenological & nutritional survey - 10 species, marked 2 of each (1A, 1B etc.). With Azuma & Vogel by last train to Sendai. Shrub in bloom (Deutzia?) along edges farm plots. This is about end of summer wet season (tsuya?); affects walkers too. New people said to leave city (Tokyo) for cooler spots. 22 July 1965, Sendai, Japan Azuma & Vogel to Kihagen for inquiries. Visited Tohoku Univ.; Dr. Aoki in Physiology, Med. School. Then Dr. T. Schlanger, NSF grant geologist, at Inst. Geol. & Paleontology. University buildings dirty & run down, but people pleasant. 23 July 1965. Fri. Tokyo, Japan Back in Tokyo to confer w. NSF, get mail. Letter of credit had arrived from Delta. Obtained free yen acct. at Chase Manh. Bank. Bought camera, Minolta C-3, w. 80 + 180 mm lens, at Kinura, about 1 block N. of Edo-dori or Chuo-dri. 26 24-5 July 1965. Sat., Sun. Office work, Tokyo, & confer with NSF office. Confer w. Vogel re budget. 27 July 1965. Took 6 a.m. Hikari to Nagoya, then train to
