Journal 16 July 1965. Shimokita Penin., Honshu, Japan. Returned to Kurodowai & Kurajoshi, arriving 15:10. / Nagel & Oz. secured materials & carpenter for feeder, etc. 17 July 1965. Overcast, windy. Confined Azuma, Nagel; carpenter was building feeder. Departed Uta Kurodowai 1230 & walked shore route to Wakinosawa in 73 min.; low tide & light pack. No boats out due wind, so took bus & train via Omin- ato to shop at Aomori, & stayed there. 18 July 1965. Shopped in Aomori for eggs & familiarize tri. Nearly everything obtainable; food shopping excellent. Some camping gear too. Prices higher than Tokyo, perhaps 10-20 % on some items. / In fish markets they sell apparent ascid- eans, like a red pineapple - [drawing of an ascidian] - stuffed; big purple, red orange, smooth, about 4" x 3." Ostomum large, 10 1/2 lbs. Apples, peaches, plerces in markets. 19 July 1965. Alto station; calm. On dock 3 porpoise of 2 species, about 9:5 to 10:5 kg. (weighed), & 6' long. Large white area ventral. Apparently used for food (= canned whole?). & Returned to Wakinosawa & Kurodowai. / Feeder complete. (15 1/2 C. at 7 a.m. at Fukuigawa). 20 July 1965. With Azuma, took boat up coast to Fukura, costal fishing town, 1 1/2 hrs by fishing diesel. High cliffs of lava frequent; imbedded in matrix. Sea caves occasionally. Building & crops + people rare. Forested slopes, steep, mostly second growth, least many conifers. Saw about 6 ospreys, including stick nest step peninsule, bird (jiv.?) on nest, + 1 a 2 flying nearby. Also saw apparent Bato, + 2 apparent Aquila together. / Cliffs changed to red & tan sandstone, & later to grey water-crook.
