14 July 1965 Shimokita Pen., Aomori Pref, Japan
Then to Kaizoke (?), merely canyon. Scared by the strange object
when a supply of peanuts & wheat had been put out (1520). | at elem.
school, saw new Kent weather insti. shelter & rain gauge; out 1 month;
science teacher Kanji Kato kept record. He thought daily temp. range
about -12° to +26°. Calm, clear, low tide about 6:30 p.m.
15 July 1965. Drizzly rain night and in morning. To Kusodomei, &
canught boat to Wakinosawa to await Azuma & Nagel; who arrived noon
from Aomori. They worked on construction problems then, & I walked back to
Kaizoke,
there 2 hours from Wakinosawa by coast. Tidal range about 3'
apparently. Wakinosawa to end road about 50 min. walk w. pack. | Watched
monkeys & camped at field shed. Light rain. | Two info. picked up piece
food from box & etc. Occas. some n all tools fright + ran off, or into
trees. Strange to see monkeys climbing about in conifers! (Thujopsis
sax). A few at a time departed; when adult drew food box nearer,
sometimes go to it immediately. All gone by 5:25 p.m. Calm; alt str.
Vigorous play of 1-3 yr. olds on ground. 5:50, "crossed" ? 3(?) to
box; soon left. | 1845, 50 yds. upclimb to S. of sheds, 100 yds. down
canyon, 3 yrs. played in Thujopsis.

16 July 1965. Light rain night; calm str. morning. In moonlight, heard
monkeys at night, to 5., & at 7a.m. To Kusodomei, conf. w. Azuma &
Nagel; then up trail behind school, going E. Saw Dryolutes-type woodpecker,
Columba, at least 3 spp. Acro. Planted areas of Cryptomeria. At
10:10 (9:45 left) at a divide. Took branch I thought for Kaizoke,
but ended up going E. at low level. Dark w. new leaves. Saw a
jay-crowed, mostly grey, lilac wings. In same area forest
the cicadas a loud chrrr. No monkey sign, tho apparent rabbit.
