Journal 13 July 1965. Kinkazan, Miyagi Pref., Japan large cryptomerias, & old cherry trees, along approach to temple area. We walked up trail to crest (E-W?). Large trees widely spaced w. little undergrowth. Dogwood in flowers. "Isolated" common low undergrowth. Ridges, more a ridge, above conifers, promi- ently deciduous - beech, maple, elm, oak; etc. Elms, birches, Cryptomeria (a few planted stands too). Natural looking perhaps climax forest on N. side ridge; the deer looked natural there (a high alarm call, single, almost monkey like; sometimes repeat- ed at intervals). Bamboo fairly common, noisy. A large+ small-leaved species maple. Smaller-leaved elm w. red stumps. (large leaves) (smaller lvs.) Beech - some in flower, some w. green nuts. )Area. Thuja, at crest a sign: Oshika Hanto (peninsula), Kinka San (golden flower mt.), "National Park of Miyagi Pref." Much deer tracks, droppings, browsed bushes, but did not see the monkeys. Apparently no provisioning. Boy at temple said about 70 in a single troop. Walking good, tho slopes steep & locally wet. Away from main trail, clean & attractive. Prob. good for field work. Many quails (dark slaty backs; some w. band tail) around island, especially flocking 500+ in evening m. Peninsula. Excellent views up islandly clifffy coast from crest, tho a stunted boy. Returned by train to Sendai. Noriama started back to Kyoto. 14 July 1965. Aomori Pref., Japan. Arrived Aomori by train from Sendai (7 hrs.). To Wakinosawa by boat - almost clear out foggy; light breeze; fine trip; Tsugars looked close. Ajuma not arrived. Got ride to near end road (Tohoku?); 15 min to end road, then, 20 along coastline (cliffs & boulders) to mount house of Kurodomi..
