Journal 12 July 1965 Takagoyama, Chiba Pref., Japan before a tunnel) and took trail up steep slope. About 15 min. up to crest of pass, where cool cooler seil sq. mile of deciduous tree type to the N. A 15' hut, where we could camp. Monkeys fed occas., but no formal seats or roofs, & all fairly wild. I saw about 6 animals; still molting; crown only on one & w. info part of mid- back on two large immurs. Beautiful spot, prob. 800+ ft. elev. Two local men, who fed monkeys, said about 170, + that 19 infus sold. born + more & 4 pregnant (27 last yr.?). They gave me chart of age & sex classif. by Nishida, made a few yrs. ago. I apparently this higher less provisioned band do molt + birth later than the provisioned band #1. 5.) Getting late, so returned to railroad in Toti, + on to Tokyo by train. 13 July 1965 Kinkazan Isl., Miyagi Pref., Japan. W. Koyama, slow train (1½ hrs.) from Sendai to Shinomaki; then boat (2 hrs.) to Kinkazan, w. stop at Ojikamisake (town ½ hr. from Kinkazan). Saw 40' lumber fishing with nets spread by pole + dipped from boat [drawing of boat]; seil boats converges on me school fish. Plants Cryptomnion; red pinetree; rocky shadowy picturesque. Kinkazan about 3 mi. long, & about 800 m. off tip of peninsula. Clear blue water. Rocks shelf shore (granite?). Main attractions about 3 temple, where hundreds of people, + prayer objects for sale. Little commercialism. Probably 1 large newish Inn. A coast guard (?) station on one point. Temples have very elaborate & intricate wooden carving, on outside below roof—much weathered. A few monkeys in cage, + one big or free on a roof. A few tame Japanese deer among the people. Beautiful
