2 July 1965 SE Kyushu, Japan
Monkeys sometimes to shore, but not known to eat limpets. Single
band w. wide range; about 2 x 4 km. / Flying fish + local
450 yen
deluxe for breakfast. 10840, took bus for Miyazaki. 1025, turn of
5pm
Almunton. Arr. Miyazaki 12:10. Dept. for Beppu 12:50 on train. Arr. Beppu.
Taki to Takasaki, 260. Looked at monkeys ½ hr. in rain. Then returned to
Beppu, & took train to Okayama, all night trip.
3 July 1965. Arrived Okayama 5:45 a.m. To ferry, + left 0800 for
Shodoshima, 1 hr 10 min. ride. Visited monkeys at Choshibi, where
Mr. Takao
pop. of about 191+75, according to warden, not incl. pups. / Orig. 5 lbs. in
Shodosh.; one transpl. to Okinoshima, another to Miyajima, + 1 split, so
?4 left (3 locater), + only main area regularly provisioned. When visitors
arrive, warden blows police whistle + siren say leave, + monkeys
rush to site. / I said that monkeys here showed much less dom. friendly
+ social tension than at Takasaki, according to studies by Kawamura &
Jeter Yamada. This first trip of Yoshida here. As current scientific
studies. Climate prob. as mild as on Kyushu. / Monkey in zone of
red pine to 30' tall, + law bushes. Apparently stay in pine grove.
+ 4 had died.
Said to be 45 born, I saw 1 + close, w. 2 infx. same size +
appearance, 7/8. Warden said there twins, + that another set, to
different mother, born about 3 yrs. ago (how know not adopted ?). /
Monkey large, pelage good, + only occas. & showed signs molt. Keeper
said last yr. first born Mar. 8; late Mar. this year. / Bus to Karabe,
then down "slope way," a farmers, + saw large group monkeys at foot. These
graze bamboo shoots + other things, tourists. / Bus downhill to Kusukube,

then due to heavy landing, + took 1530 boat for Okayama. Then took
train for Takasaki; inland, arriving about 1730, + spent nite in room.
