To Aomori, N. Honshu, Japan.
Altus clouds. 12+ boats out fishing nearby. Departed Noroai settlement
0830 and walked trail + building road to Cape Toppei. Then on dirt road
to S. to end bus line. Road goes through tunnels in volcanic rock,
along seashore. Many women out gathering seaweed and molluscs at low
tide. Seals, gulls. A mostly white woytail (?) large shore rook, + a
smaller tit (?) w. long tail+white outer. tail feathers; and blue robin-
sized bird w. red-brown breast (- nest w. large young in rock pocket
at Noroai). No louder new, nor in forest. / Bus to Minumya, then
train at about noon to Aomori. Along way acres. bought a
dite (brown; Orsin?). Orientation + ticket lines. Aomori; then stay-
ed at ryohen Sei Yu So.
30 June 1965. Left Aomori airport 11:45 on flight to
Tokyo. Mostly cloudy so saw little. Then left Tokyo 1:20
on flight to Miyazaki, St Kyushu, + then met K. Yoshiba
of J.M.C. Stayed at Niigatso ryohen. Fine views over Japan
sea of sea coast slopes + inlets.
1 July 1965. Left 7:45 a.m. on bus to Koskino (31°25'N, 130°25'E).
Yoshiba told me seminar hours at Toiminishoii; for brushing. Ivarish
studied, + his student Itani; and while there saw monkeys + became
interested in these; start JMC w. Imon, Itani, Kawamura. / along
road picturesque fishing towns, much planted Cryptomeria (good for boat
hldg.). Coast of little sandstone strata. / Arrived opposite Koskino, at
small settlement 4 min at Ishinami, + met Mr. lwesuke Tokito, retired school
principal, interested in botany + monkeys. / Of 18 mol. 9+ on isl., said 2 birds
(found 3). 11 born last yr., + expect 10-15 this yr. All birds died last
yr. during 20 day typhoon period, when island inaccessible. / This
