Masukawa, Aomori Pref, Japan.
10 miles, much of it though underground without trails. From other people Azuma heard tales of sightings in Thujopsis zone
in summer, including instance about 10 mt before in canyon
bottoms about a mile from the station, where mother w. baby
seen with other + rather tame. / Mt. H.Masukawa rounded,
friested, 714 meters, N.S lat. 41-08'N, N 140-17'E. / We saw down
track, probably serene, & browned bushes, food. by same.
28 June 1965. Windy, overcast. Left station about 9 a.m. by truck
for Masukawa. Bus at 10 a.m. to N. toward Cape Tappi. Never road
through wooded fishing villages; boats, nets, drying squid. 10:50,
bus terminated due to construction ahead. We walked to next town +
chartered fishing boat around Cape + S. to Horonai, a single family
village. Water clear, cold. Islets. About 40 min. on 22' diesel fish
boat. This E. coast low lava cliffs backed by bare rounded hills, w.
stunted trees close above - like Calif. coast S. of San Francisco; the
tiger lilies looked like poppies from distance. Brodavia, lupin a
witch. / Based at fishermen's home (no roads here). Left about 1 p.m.,
walked N. 1 mile, then up stream valley of Horonai. Logging Thujopsis
this, + large areas slopes with old stumps. Cut area w. seedless-
inside + no tree reproduction. Azuma talked with loggers +
farm men; no monkeys now (logging since 1957), the one spot
far up canyon (lost winter?); about 8 km. from Mt. Masukawa.
As other places, Deutscia in flower, + stripe flowers hanging from
walnuts. / Heard reports recently to cross ft. Horonai stream, + to be
seen often in fall on hills near shore. / Someone did tell SA that monkeys
sometimes (formerly) on first ridge from sea.
