3 Journal 24 June 1965. N. Honshu, Japan Boat (fisherman) to Wakinisawa, leaving 7 a.m. Then bus at 8:05 to Onmits R.R. St. (arr. 10 a.m.). Missed train to Aomai, thinking we were to take another bus. Swollen meeting in station room. Town close to foot Mt. Oze, densely wooded w. lower slopes cut clean in many areas. / Pain lost right at Kurodi, + overcast morning). * 25 June (1965: Round from Azuma, so took bus excursion to Lake Towada (210 yen, 2 1/2 hrs., w. commentary). Vegetation mixed trees, thick green, few flowers. Pines azores in flower. Some snow at higher levels, or on Hakkeko. Streams, small waterfalls, desert-like rocks. A few hot spring hotels (onsen). Arrived shore Lake T. about 10 a.m. Took boat or beautiful shoreline ride around peninsulas to visit town of Jasumiya, where dozens small boats for rent, five mins. Tall Thuyaopsis, about 30" dbh, in small redwood-like stands. High rough-faced cliffs around lake, with clinging bushes + penis-like Japanese prints. Returned by bus to Aomai. Phone from Azuma, asking us to come to Aomai, so we returned by bus (about 1 hr.). Met Azuma and Masayo Otoko, + all stayed at inn (Sei Yu So) on NW side of town. We go to Tsugaru Tomorrow. * June 24 addenda. Took last train via Noboji to Aomai, then to Sakuya Onsen, a large hot spring hotel in ski area. Took mixed sex hot baths in mineral water. Plou a little sun down, but many people. 26 June 1965. Took 08:10 train for Miisaya, on E side Tsugaru Pen. Then rice fields, heavily wooded hills to W. Much more prosperous than Wakinisawa area, + water calm (protected). We went to the forestry station and met the chief there, + Azuma took talked long with him.
