Koford 2 Journal 23 June 1965 N. Henshaw, Japan Light at 4:4 a.m. Rice fields flooded, wooded hills, apple trees, leyotschis. Deciduous tree and planted (?) conifers. A few crows. Arrived Konai about 6 a.m. Mort building, wooden + law; fish lumber, & port town. Ships carry train to Hokkaido. Walked to boat area, when small large decid boat (100') took us to Wakinosawa, shoreline peninsula, a distance of about 2 1/2 hours. Sea clean & fairly calm today. | At Wakinosawa, many drying squid or kims & nets. Several small store with hardware, groce- ries, clothing; about like Playa Hermosa. Azuma introduced us to the mayor, Yamazato. We left boat 1:30 in small boat for Kuso- donani. Shoreline of stiff cliffs w. caves + pockets. Shoreline road had gap of about 1 km., shortly before reaching Kusodanai. Few sea cirrus? birds; occasional puffin, gull, or alcid, but a fishing hawk (Buteo?) fairly common along shoreline. K. a small fishing village, w. wastre, a few dozen wooden houses. Now dipping in hot water & then dry- ing small fish, about 3"; & drying spread on nets. Many women working. Azuma said really all 20 to 50 go to Tokyo to work in summer, sometime now. | Mayor of Wakinos., & others, said a love donkey came to kill at edge town & stayed several hours on June 16, and that people fed him; apparently now seen them before; now went. Headman Kusod.- Tomijiro Yamada. Store owner, Wakinos.- Shinjiro Kawagishi. | We left to Kusod. 1:30 and walked to north valley N., along road seeable, and up canyon. A few crops lower part, but no people died then. Visited monkey feeding area, saw several, walked to higher level, & returned. Saw droppings of serow (?) in shady forest. Stayed night in Kusodanai, in home of dead men.
