Koford 1 Journal - Japan 1965 4 June 1965. Departed San Juan, P.R., for New York. Ls. 15:30. 15 June, via TWA to San Francisco, TWA, departing 19:15. 16 June, conferred with K.F. Meyer at Nooper Foundation, San Francisco concerning devil monkey colonies in Samoa. He thought the Concord W. Arnold Society at Univ. Cal., Forestry, idea important, in economic aspect. Visited Dr. A. Leopold at MVZ. 17 June, visited Dr. Leon Schmidt at Davis, and saw con- struction in progress for the primate center. He also thought the Samoa project impractical. Visited Dr. R. Rudd, W. Hamilton. 18 June, helicopter Berkeley to S.F. Then PAA fl. 1, Ls. 0900, to Honolulu. 19 June, visited Dr. John Henderson, E-W Center of Univ. Hawaii. 20 June, 12:30, departed on PA JAL for Tokyo. Arrived 3+, 15:45 21 June and was met by K. Yoshiba and S. Azuma. At Akasaka Prince Hotel met C. Nogel, and all conferred. Azuma recently one month at Shimoshita; he said Kudomari brood about 15, w. 6 adult ♀♀, of which 5 bore had infants, starting April. He had photos taken within 5-10 meters range. Yoshiba said 26 already born at Takasalei, + over 1000 total. Azuma said monkeys in region of Inland Sea bred early, for no obvious reason. New vegetation now started at Shimoshita, + photos show some with cream mating. Yoshiba says Isoyuzen usually earliest. young. Overcast, rainy, muggy in Tokyo. 22 June 1965. Visited NSF office + met O'Connell, Arvey, others. No cash from Delta yet; sent cable requesting. Bought transport tickets, shopped, discussed project w. Azuma + Yoshiba. Latter de- parted for Monkey Center. Azuma, Nogel, + I boarded train for Hamori at 6:30 p.m.; practically new sleepers.
