2 August 1963 Rio Apurimac, Dpt. Ayacucho, Peru.
valley, so no view across Apurimac possible. Rough riding in truck, + all cargo badly masked. Frequent stops to deliver parcels, beer, sell newspapers,
eggs, dried [illegible]s &c at Ayra. Morano, parota, later, when road we across
Apurimac. Crossed edge river opposite Terente about 4:15 p.m. Crows on small
dikes softs (2 sols each). My few 40 cedis (= $150). From Huanta, the Swiss paid
70, for 12½ hr. ride. / At Terente, no road comm., with Luisiana, so stayed
overnight. This is part of La Union, a group of haciendas. A large cemetery room
and seventy hithen available. / Heard Caprimulgus edge airstrip in evening.
Slept at edge strip. No insects at night. Nearly full moon.
3 August 1963. alto - cumulus with light breeze, 0800. Waited for plane to
go to Luisiana (4 hrs. fast bike). It arrived about 4 p.m.
4 August Resumed collecting at Avir valley in forest.
Kaspole still at it too.
5? August 1963. Backland & Dembel parachuted to landing
strip's area at about 1000'. It was last min. surprise to
the rest of us that B. went, leaving me rather bewildered. At
their level grows a meter tall, + flatter grass, just a boggy, so
they decided airstrip impossible in terrain available. They as-
cented many dirt trails & sign. About 50°/o wooded at that
level, with epiphyte entires. Apparently very hard to move
about on ground.
Camps at head E. branch of Mantalo River (v.b. drained.)
8 August 1963. [illegible] Joernes & Peter Loh joined B & S.
They plan to walk N. to higher ground of lake area. Flow will lay
to Matayo & San Ponce to argue about areas. A copious notes + U.S.A. itinerary.
10 August 1963. Supposedly their walk starts today. Shotgun
labels, funnel, went in traps, went in with Joernes & Loh. Hope
to "mouselift" specimens out of higher country. Arrived 15g.
2 cars to go? AT a new H (cc) helicopter to take Kit
