Tapuna Pass, Opp. Ayacucho, Peru.
or alpacas. No two-toed or guinea pigs. Under bushes in moss,
many burrows 1"-2" diam., and large mouse-sized droppings, [but]
traps put them caught 0], included 2 blind set no. 0 steel traps. Just
Cold breeze from NW in evening, fog forming at crest. Calm & clear at night,
but ice condensed on sleeping bag.
31 July 1963. Traps held only 1 Phyllotis pictus, 1 Akodon boliviensis. Put
up shines. Phyllotis partly eaten by another mouse (?). Saw 2 corsons, both
brown. Sparrows dark. Runto, mostly white underneath, black tips wings,
hovering over rocks & grass. Boys said wrenlike & deer in rocky dell at
dawn.
higher level. Most were brown; grew near streams. | About 1130, Ciró Asam-
lucié arrived (Ayacucho student biologist). We walked about 1 mile from here
to NW, toward Apurimac R., & stopped at Quebrada stone house. They gave us
chicha and potato-like vegetable to eat; not bad. We put out 30 traps,
some by house stream, rock wall, in leivinecha shrubs, on and near large
boulders high on hill. Completed about 4.30 p.m. at 5 p.m. (after sunset),
a trap at house took a newt Akodon eluanus (?). Two dogs moved some traps
near house evening. No bats seen or night birds heard. Pollywogs in
stream. Many Cerulean, & Gonotrichia lorenensis, plus other
small lizards. Boiled amarantus for lunch, baked potato
for dinner. Cloudy evening. Clear & cold by midnight.
1 August 1963. Wet & frozen. Breeze down valley. Traps near stream
by house took 2 long-tailed mice. Phyllotis by rock wall on dry slope.
Oligoryzomys by boulder higher hill. No catch among bushes or hill,
tho much sign. Bait was endosperm of soaked corn. Saw Tundus, and
Pategma gigas in yard. Put up specimens. Corn, warmed dry in pan,
for breakfast. Ciró left for Tambo last eve, to return first thing in morning.
Not here by 12:15. I walked to Tapuna Pass & waited for car. Now by 2 p.m.
