27 July 1963 to Ayacucho, Peru.
Had slats, 2066-2070, in much too up net hung nearby, at edge grassy clearing. Yesterday Kaeche shot a small Nona; dark color, about
10 a.m. I left on DATCO plane from Luisiana for Ayacucho (11523ft), with
Jocum Dtel. Flew down Apurimac to jet, with Mantos & then up
Mantos to Ayacucho. Came up to col off, dry out, ship specimens, and
collect in high country, and get rid of persistent diarrhea. Saturday.
28 July 1963. About 4 p.m. left hotel, climbed hill to NW, & set 21 trap
traps next to rocks, rock walls, in area short-grazed grass, scattered bunches
of peppercorn, maguey, prickly pear, other. Old rock wells & stone piles.
29 July 1963. Upper 14 traps held mice (noz. 2071-74), one tail.
Bait-walnut. Few sparrows hunk, marsh larks, oven slopes. During day
plane arrived from Luisiana w. Dick Tompkins & Pepe Parodi. They departed
late afternoon. Pepe offered me use of his pickup truck for trip to Tumbos.
30 July 1963. With truck, driver, M. Becon (?) & daughter, drove to Tumbos, 3 hr.
drive. First then low country of soft rocks, cavers, spires, caƱons, & SW direct
US desert appearance. Then up to Qumra, small mud town. Higher, to
shot grass pampa where battle Ayacucho fought. Brushy higher, and
finally near Apacheta (14000 ft) green puna, a lake, clear streams,
alpacas, llamas. Much beat up by livestock, however. Jagged ridges
dark rocks. No yareta seen. Lapwings, guava birds. Then down to Tumbos
about 11000 ft., an Indian town. Bull teaming on a canal today; some sort of holiday. We left Pepe's suegra, Antonia, & drove on. Ups & downs low in valley. Ruin, clear. Trees, shrubs, birds. Cheean on slopes. Finally up to pass of Tapuro, where road started to descend. I camped there. Put out 35 traps near rocks, under hiwimcha bushes. Many
humans in moss; droppings. Pastoral Indians (Quechua), in thatched stone huts, growing potatoes; horses, cattle, sheep, but no llamas
