Koford Journal 13 July 1963 To Luisiana, Apurimack; Peru 8 a.m. for Ayacucho. Flight over fog and ocean to S, then E. at 5300 meters altitude. Saw dry coast, more shrubs higher, then stone-walled fields on slopes. Some lakes in rock + grassland. Clouds over summit, but good view of two nevados to north. Then clear over Rio Mantaro and descended to dry Ayacucho flood valley. Much mogyey, spriny bushes, pepper trees. Widely spread bushes and small trees. Dry beat-up aspert. A large wheat field near airstrip; about 15 days cut wheat with sickles (15 s./day = $.60). On ground, iguanas lava rockers. Cullets under rocks. O-6 lizards. A man making net for trout in a nearby lake. Near airstrip some goats, but no other stock seen. Dusty, dry. A wayshomo said rain Dec.-April. Cloudy over Nts. to east.) We debarked from plane about 0925, then waited for another plane. Waited all day - it arrived 5 p.m., + not to go until tomorrow. ! Near airstrip, mogyey, prickly pear cactus, thorny lumber. I saw sparrows hawk, doves. 14 July 1963. To Luisiana, Obto. Cuzco, Peru. Plane left about 10 a.m. DC-3 cargo type. Up river, then over mountains to Apurimace Valley. Stopped briefly at Santa Teresita. Then upstream to Luisiana. Forested, with yucas, maĆ­z, fields. Indian fishtraps along river. Tall thatched roofed houses. Arsen- dolor nesting. Parrots, ant birds, caracaras, and unusual trop- ic forest birds. Fish traps along Apurimace River; curious limit of steeln, cane; remains barbacos, shredded, near pools at swape many points. In evening I set 15 traps near river brender. Shot a nighthawk in daylight, + a tyrannis. In evening shot + caracaras; gby river, among sand + rocks; different species, apparently.
