Peru trip - Summer 1963
8 May 1963.
New York, N.Y.
Consulted with Fairfield Orbon, president N. Y. Zool. Soc., and his
assistant, Jorge Merch, at Rockefeller Center office. Met Peter Ismbel,
Brooks Bacheland, who are principal members expedition. They
expect to leave early June, fly plane to Peru, & set up base at
Lucisiana on Apurimac River. Area to be explored: Cordillera
Vilcabamba, lat 12° S., λ 72½° W., between Urubamba and
Apurimac rivers.. altitude to over 14000 ft. At N. tip area, an
area of 18 lobos. Expect to drop by parachute, set up landing
strip. (Much correspondence followed - Merch, Bacheland).
9 July 1963. Arrived Lima, Peru. Left Puerto Rico night
of July 7 via PAA flight 295, via Caracas to Panama.
Stayed at Tivoli Hotel 8 July, and visited C Z BA headquarters,
and Borges Memorial Lab. Delinks and Mordey now active in
collection and identification of Panama birds. In Lima, took
direct to Casa Humboldt (Francisco Paula Canio 358), pension
and home of Koepcke. Dr. H-W.K. will accompany me to
Lucisiana (Apurimac River) on July 13.
10-12 July, 1963
Lima, Peru
Consulted Jorge Millery, Universal Travel, liaison man of
expedition. Radio communication has been poor thru SATCO
(airline). Started job of getting shotgun, ammo (Rebola Nosd,
and license (337 Av. Espana). With letter from game dept., and
help of Augustin Jordan in the Prefectura, secured necessary
papers & obtained gun. U.S. ammo available, #10 to 12 ga., &
also components, shot to #10, and .22 shot shells. Food good in
Teasrooms, supermarkets, pizzerias, & elsewhere.
