Insects - General
July 4, 1956 BCI, Canal Zone
Carl W Bettemeyer [is] studying associates of army ants.
Formerly worked here with Schneider. Ant queens & workers
& mites on them. He puts light out at night by white wall
or cloth & many different moths & other insects there in mor-
ing. He said took 6 "tailed moth once (= Coprapteryx?). I saw
peanut-head fulgorid on an wall. Our army ants are
many flier size of home flier of genus Callodexia. He
thinks there may lay eggs or roaches disturbed by ants.
September 22, 1956 A group of army ants raiding at N.
side kitchen, proceeding well as if to wasp nest, about 9 a.m.
Trailing from near lower water pump (near BLO). About
noon a group raiding wasp nests at SW corner of Hoskins
house, about a quart of ants hanging together on wasp
nest (Polistes), & several ants carrying single larvae 1/2" long.
December 8, 1956. Saw two of the large blue-tipped-winged
dansel fliers flying together about 1 ft apart for 1+ min-
utes as if one pursuing other. This first time I have noted
such association. Weight's colors differed as if ♂ & ♀.
December 22, 1956. Dr. Ansley had lights out at night trying
to get bug Lola.
January 10, 1957. Between hut houses off sq at DC 2 3/4, 100+
moths perched within 3 ft ground. Similar grp. near N. side
trail near TB 3 (?). Eye on wing grey moth. W. Lundy says
there always at site.
