C. Koford 1957 Trees & Shrubs April 16, 1957 BC So., Canal Zone rain Jan. 9 until 15 April, then .45 inch (very little at B.C.I.). Some membrillo (Gustavia) fruits on trees now. Passiflora (red) still in bloom. Some black palm fruits have fallen. Many figs on ground under large bigtree near UMW. 27 April 1957 Few flowers remain on big scale 50 yds. S. of Foreman's House. Deep yellow tree (Cassia?) in bloom on island and on nearby mainland. Some membrillo fruits double-foot sized & have fallen. 4 May 1957 Only a few blossoms left on scale 5. of Fore- mans House. Some black palm fruits have fallen, & pecaries eating fleshy parts. Orangish-yellow blooming tree still promi- nent-one near Barbour Pt. house, many near Bambosa. Forest floor covered with dry leaves. Some Gustavia fruits have fallen, & some eaten by wild hogs. Still no rain, and many many trees leafless. 7 May 1957 Some Bombax verrugosum starting to leaf out. Parana tree or Slothia has opened pods & shed fruit. 21 May 1957 Little rain yet. A striking bright yellow flower- ing tree in bloom - guayacan like color, but leaves pinnate compound. An orangish-yellow tree also prominently in bloom. Chechi is said to have never seen these trees bloom prominently in other years. Rain by 25 May. 1 June 1957 Many fruits & nuts of Gustavia on ground, and many new leaves, but at UMW O to 4 several blooming profusely still. Almendra still leafless.
