16 March 1957 Barro Colorado Is, Canal Zone.
Roble (T. pentaphylla) in quite blossom, including big one 50 yds
S. of Foreman's House. Still in bloom 27 March.
27 March 1957. Most Bucavia superba blossoms have
fallen. A few faded Rob Santos (Triplaris) blooms. One guayacan
in bloom, near T Z3. Balsa shedding cotton. Bamboo
Larrigan shedding leaves, & rare or flowers. Big Tree at
AVA well leafed, but one at AVA9 with flower buds which
are falling off before mature (or at Van Tyne big tree much
earlier).
5 April 1957 Driving across Isthmus to Colon saw
many cuipos with seeds (4 wings), red or yellow.
Few deciduous trees without leaves in Ft. Sherman area,
but many near Bamboo & on Barro Colorado.
7 April 1957 Big almonds S. of Foreman's House still
in bloom. Some jacaranda still in blossom at shelter,^
and rarely a guayacan. Cuipo now with seeds
on trees. Rarely a Bamboo still with "notes"; most
with fruits & dropping them. Many black palm
fruits on trees.
12 April 1957 The tall robles S. of Foreman's House still in
pink blossom. Fruits 4" diam. on membrillo near #T81.
No leaves on almonds on point opposite generator house.
A yellow flowered tree (Cossia?) in bloom 100 yds. N. of Babon
Pit. house.
16 April 1957. Also Roble 50 yds. N. of Chichis' house still in
bloom. Bambocopia at VT 4 now well leafed out. This is
longest dry season in Balboa since 1931- rarely any
