December 1st, 2, 1956 Barro Colorado I.s., Canal Zone
tall shrub = Erythrina panamensis; still blooming at JZ O.
all leaves & flowers gone from Schefflera near Test Table Bldg.
Bambusa prae has lost leaves.
December 23, 1956. The lilac colored flowers of compound (penisto)
leaved small tree still prominent. Dead pod [heart symbol]. Found near
school line on Orchid Is. (W. side). On east side Orchid Island
many Bambusa, are with two "powder puffs" already, others
with some leaves still. Espora half bare - canna on W. side
Orchid Is. Strelitzia half leafless with yellowing leaves.
Big Tree on Van Tyne trail has lost all leaves but many young
flower buds, but its we south of Dorato steps has half leaves
still. Red flowered Inga still prominent in forest.
December 24, 1956. Pronounced first day of "Iverson" by Cheli
and Oscar Kidd - because wind N. rather than NE. 15 to 20
MPH, with strong cores & many whiplashes in midday. Andropogon
and other grasses with heads now.
January 2, 1957. On making circuit of island by boat noted
high proportion of leaf leafless larger trees. Flowers ran - the
lilac - like as new water still in bloom.
January 5, 1957. Many "shaving brushes" now being dropped by
Bombax barbigera at many sites. Espora with few leaves.
Bambusa bare. Red Inga still in flower. Along road
in The Cut, "gallito" (Erythrina) in bloom, & much poro-poro
in yellow flower along Bambusa - Pedro Miguel road.
January 9, '57. Many "shaving brushes" of Bombax and flowers
of "gallito" (Erythrina) in Bambusa area.
