October 23, 1956 Barro Colorado Island,
firecracker still prominent on 10' tall leafless
shrubs, few branches, some species, in dark woods.
No trees in blossom, but almonds in fruit, + some
vines flowering (purple trumpets).
November 11, 1956. At several places in forest in dark areas a
spindly 10' tall shrub without leaves with tufts long red flowers.
The Schizolobium tree over Koford House seems to be losing leaves now.
November 20, 1956 The Schizolobium in yellow flower. Many
fallen by Nov. 22. Conspicuous yellow in distance. The
Malay apple also has flowers (red) in one section.
December 5, 1956. The Schizolobium still in conspicuous
flower but losing flowers now. Many weets & small birds
at flowers. A squirrel cuckoo commonly seen in that tree.
Rather dry, clear & windy today + yesterday. Start of dry seas?
December 9, 1956. Most flowers of Schizolobium now gone. A
lilac-like purple flower in liloan or tree at edge clearing, + a
vine with pale orange petals and many stamens. The red flowered
Lurga (?) shrub still conspicuous in forest.
