Pipra mentalis
JAN 27 1957 In morning W.E. Lowry saw ->4 2 apparent
ff near SM trail near Z, to N. Humming + checking of
Lills heard. A few days earlier Murl Denning heard & saw
similar on TGP trail about 80y across from termite
nest on palm trunk.
29 January 1957 I took one in mist net on. 5M1. Died in
room in captivity, o7, testis 3 1/2 x 2 1/2 mm. Male Now
(male 4)
31 January 1957 Mr. Paul Hawes reported seeing 3 on FEL
about 5 p.m.
today, displaying, rather tame.
17 March 1957 Mr. Hawes had often seen them again
near same site, just beyond edge of a small clearing. He
showed me three perches which were often used by the
druids (o707). A single male was on one perch. He has
photographed these birds in motion pictures recently.
26 March 1957 I saw one dancing side to side on 15' high
branch near SM3. Ramsey John reported 4 o7 o7 at DF3, 1
on 27 March.
12 April 1957 Near TB1 I saw 2 males 50 yds.
apart on horizontal open perches (3/8" drain.) 15' up,
No leaves near perches. No courtship dancing - merely
sitting. This is area where Mr. Hawes saw courtships.
21 April 1957 Near TB 1 1/2 saw 2 at one site and two
more 30 yds. beyond, all male. Displaying on perches 15'
above ground & making short whistling sound (electric spark like)
and hummingbird-like sounding flight between perches. Two
males on one perch 10" apart. One bird body bright red head
low & sidesteppped toward other, which moved away. Repeated.
One on perch ye was twice joined by 2. male sidesteped
