Cracidae Penelope purpurascens cristata July 27, 1956 Barro Colorado Island and zone About 6:30 a.m. I saw 1 on lowest foraged branch of crown of tall tree 150 yds. NW of New Lab. It sat, walked & finally flew as another approached it along bank. Pair? November 3, 1956 Two seen on open branch of large tree just of Duveto 3 about noon. No calls heard. November 13, 1957. In evening at 5:45 p.m. saw 2 in top of 50' tall tree 200 yds. NE of Plantation Point. Lost north saw 2 one day now No calls heard. December 12 & 12, 1956. Two perched about 6:30 a.m. in trees 50 yds. SE of Chapman House, on same limb. One or two seen during day in trees SE of Barlow House. Two seen in trees seen 5/2 O to 4, together. December 13, 1956. In early a.m. about 6:30 two in balco SE of Chapman House. One calling, whistle sol-la; short, followed by low "rugh" or breez, about 1 sec. and long. Surly they flew across clearing to NW side of Test Table Bldg. // Often heard about 200 yds. SE of Chapman House. December 16, 1956. Two in Apandria 50 yds. E. of Barlow House, apparently eating fruit. Remained perched & sat thru native during rainstorm. | Saw one in balco by Chapman House. // The call followed by low bark heard in area W. of 1952 Laboratory. The frequency of sighting pairs & frequent vocalization may indicate mating activity. December 19, 1956. Two flew from NNW to SE of 1952 Bldg. & later were seen in Apandria 50 yds. from the Bldg.
