Koford Falconidae Daptrius americanus October 21, 1956 Barro Colorado Is., C. Z. About 3:30 p.m. heard loud hoarse parrot-like squawk to N. of 1924 Rdgy, Later it moved to 75 yds. NW of New Lob & I had good view. Called often, sometimes 3 squawks in succession, very loud. Black breast + white belly. Red around bill: November 13, 1956 about 8:30 a.m. heard much calling & saw 2 stop large tree 75 yds. NW of New Lob. 16 January 1957 at AVA 8 ½, east side trail, two screaming loudly at me below, first an apparent ♀, then a ♂ 100' distant and lower, about 40 ft. upched. Screams like Celus or parrot, go again and again, for 5 min.t. 19 January found fledgling after- cranaphus near site. 23 January 1957 Near AVA 8 two screaming high in trees, apparently feeding on wasp nest. Nest on side of large branch 80 ft. up, shaped , about 6 ft. long. One cara- cara hung to trunk and attached nest with bill, hooking off pieces. The raucous calls & fast flight seem reminicent of large parrot. Bocanegra says this kind of wasp has "siete casas." 12 February 1957 Near AVA trail about 6 saw 2 calling loudly 50 ft. up in trees. They seemed to scream at people below them. 20 April 1957 Heard one calling near JZ 2, About 7 days ago heard & saw me same place.
