Cathartidae
Cathartes aura
October 30, 1956 Barro Colorado (b.) Canal Zone
Fresh feeling morning with dry 4/10 cumulus altostratus. Saw part migratory flight of vultures. About 70 over Frijoles area, but gliding there from milling groups over B.C.D. about 2000 seen in 10 minute period 8:15-8:25 a.m. A few bowls with some sun B.C.D.
24 January 1957 at least 2 flew up from near roost of a coati put out yesterday afternoon (killed then) and perched 20' up in nearby trees in mature forest near AVA 12.
24 February 1957 Dr. A. Wetmore saw large numbers apparently migrating near Panama City.
1 March 1957 About 8:30 a.m. I saw about 50 flying NW from near Summit Gardens, and about 50 perched in various trees (12 in single tree) in the gardens. Other large groups seen between Summit + Pedro Miguel.
3 April 1957 A. Wetmore thinks he can distinguish resident (yellow bands across hindneck + rhomboidal area on crown) from migrant race. He says he has material for revision of Cathartes.
