Birds - General
4 February 1957 Pacheca Is, Pearl Islands, Panama
made deep rattle in bladder at times. Opposite side
of Pacheca had mostly gently sloping sandy beach. Adjacent rocky Pachequilla had many boobies & pelicans perched,
but no nesting evident near. This island had much
Boobys but also spring coster, & general aspect was very
dry. Perhaps no water on islands. On south we saw large
gray bottle-nosed porpoise about 6 x 4', a large manta-type
ray which kept clear of water again & again. Royal terns
occasional, & 2 or 3 petrels seen. Many laughing gulls. The
trip from Mire Dock at F.T. Amador required 3 1/4 hrs. each way,
mostly into wind on return trips. We caught 2 jack about
2' long near Pachequilla.
Colón to Portobelo Colón, Panama
9 February 1957
Leaving Colón to Portobelo in early morning I saw few sea
birds - a few terns & perhaps 2 apparent procellariforms.
Large swells, & windy. At Portobelo bay cold caged suff-
nions (thick-lilled). // We found two nearly fledged
carag-ops
Baldc vultures in a cave at side of high part fort.
Cave 8' high x 10' wide, & birds reticled into arm 2' wide x
4 ' deep. No regurgitation noted, but hessed. Down dark
pastly gray. Kosen took photos, & I took a Kodachrome
of site.
26 February 1957 On 9-12 a.m. walk saw 3 pairs of large
woodpeckers (Dryocopus and Phloeocoestes), near WMW 4,
WMW 10, and WMW 13.
19 March 1957 There is a nest of blue gray tanager in
small tree near SW corner of ZMA house. Apparently a nest of
palm tanagers with young in bloch palm at NW corner of
