C Koford 1956 Birds - general October 23, 1956 Canal Zone Conductor train said he saw many hawks near Diablo Heights about 10 days ago. Once he saw great numbers near Balio, upper vently coming from north Barro Colorado I.s., C.Z. October 24, 1956 Left mist met up where set for date last over. During day took a Myiostetes similar size & an item. Sporophila Banded then & released. Sun day a Pipia montoli got in Chapman House & flew against screen or torquet (7/1819). Small yellowish bride, apparently wandering, seen on shrubs & cufivists among plants seen near buildings today Saw one with metallic new-black back, head & neck black front + breast brilliant yellow. Another olive yellow with diffuse gray at tip's wings & tail (dorsal). One yellowish with light line over eye. Canal Zone October 25, 1956 From Modden Waye to near Diablo Heights saw many hawks, apparently migrating east. Most seen over hills near Bailord Highway mile 4, near Paraiso. Saw about 1000 in one milling bunch near Pedro Miguel gun club; then several flocks of 100 to 200 to near Ft. Clayton, at least 2000 within 1/2 hour. Mostly Sevanius hawks, the dark head + throat + pale under wing coverts being apparent, tails rather long & square tipped, wings rather pointed. Perhaps some other birds too (dark beneath, or Butes s). Numbers of turkey vultures circled with the flocks of hawks. The big groups milled in columns 1000' or more tall, rising, then birds glided east. There seen about
