Birds - general - Panama
Barro Colorado, Is.
CZBA, Canal Zone
July 10, 1956 (Tues.)
Engen Eisenmann of New York has since Friday. Not a full bibliography or many notes on Panam birds, at N.Y.
In a tell the west of New Lab we saw open solar using nests (5 there in 1 group, at least 2 seen used). In same tree I saw 3 purple fruit crow - Eisenmann says little known of them tho rather common here. On lake many block trees on stumps protruding above water. On way at Frijoles so many martins, some grey-breasted and some of a S. amer. species, vide Eisenmann.
August 15, 1956. Mrs. Carson (wife Dr.H. C. U. Bema.) with found a nest with 2 fresh eggs about 1 ft. above ground in dark forest near a log on Shannon trail (about 1/2). Eggs pinlike, brown cloudy markings 1 end. Probably bird. It ran along ground; dark or dusk. She said it had blue ring around eye when first seen.
August 22, 1956. The commonest call in the forest is still the ant-shrike. Many heard as every walk in forest. (Thamnophilus punctatus)
September 4, 1956 Groups of as many or 4 in Cerojice or Manee or other trees at edge Main Old Lab Clearing.
September 16, 1956. On 27 Aug. 28 there was a dove, large, orange eye, on flat stick nest 8' above ground & halfway out branch of a retired tree near point of clearing NE of Old Lab. Today nest thin + no doves there.
A large deep gray duck, white or tips tail feathers (cut laterals over mainly) seen several times in clearing near Old Lab - but yesterday.
