7 February 1957 Barro Colorado Is., Canal Zone
after about 2 weeks here Robert Enders believes that the
population of large carnivores (except coatis) is very low,
judged by tracks & scats mainly. He thinks this due to
hunters mainly.
To Portobelo, Colon, Panama-
9 February 1957 With Col. Selodell and others, Sue & I
went to Portobelo for the day (in army LCM from Colm).
In room of old fort I saw about 6 bats & captured 2. In
a coco palm about 10 which escaped. About 6 small
leaf-nosed bats (= Micronycteris?) in small arm of a cave in
side of highest part of fort.
12 April 1954 4 mi. E. 1 mi. S. Pacora, Panama.
In driving w man named Bardeles shot 6 capybaras.
Estimated into: 3 young 18 lbs. apiece, 3 large 45 to 60lbs.
The 3 large weighed 91 lbs. together when skinned & dressed.

24 April 1954 same [La Jagua Gun Club], Panama
Visited club with Karl Curtis. Savannas, patcher open
forest, & low swampy ground. Set 20 snare & set traps
in light forest near clubhouse. Saw many bats in
evening & shot a Phyllostomus. Took Chironectis from
log & Sorexptyyx from tree. Muletas (Sylvilagus)
said to be here, but I went out for an hour at night
and saw none.
25 April 1957 Troops held 2 Mygodontamys & Maximoz,
and 1 Oryzomys.
