Chiroptera July 12, 1956 Barro Colorado Is., Canal Zone (1805, CIBK - in alcohol) J Carl W Rottenmeyer found baby bat a few days ago near New Lab. I preserved it in formalin, July 7 one found on launch at Frizula Landing; not sure. Rottenmeyer says between Lake & Whalen trails on way to Tenau he saw two bats near tree nests both going in/out. On July 18 he visited site but saw no bats. 1805 CIBK July 25, 1956 Carl Rottenmeyer found baby bat in Chapman house. Saved in alcohol (1809). August 15, 1956. About 500 yds NE of Old Lab, a dead tree (Guayacan?) about 30' tall, & bats coming out about 20' up in evening. Long winged & skinned warts. I think they are Desma. Saw also one of Sept. 1. August 18, 1956 On base of the big Pandanus tree on Van Tyne trail about 35 or W. side as high as 20 ft. up trunk, resting. Two sided light stripes. August 22, 1956. About 40 at same site. I took 2 flash pictures of some of these bats. Sept. 11, 1956. 1/4 gram young found in boat. October 14, 1956. U.S. Army. At Medical Detachment near Madden Wye, they were spraying attic of galvanized iron roofed concrete block house for bats. They were large = Artibeus jamaicensis Phyllostomids. Perhaps 100 in air at once. One killed was only half grown. The men said spraying kept the bats away for a period of time but that eventually they returned again. October 31, 1956 As usual, halfway down SSE side of Old Lab's office well under cover near worst nests.
