Lemmus trimucronatus
15 May Barrow, Alaska
Several people have
mentioned seeing two or three
lemmings dead in camp but
other than that there are no
reports. The Eskimos have
seen none.
Three scrapes were made
with a D-8 cut in Central
Marsh to see whether or not
lemmings could be turned up.
One scrape of 212 paces gave
no lemming and no sign, another
of 275 paces gave same results,
a third of 300 paces gave 3
locations of sign - one with a
nest with a lemming in the snow,
one location with droppings on
the snow and remains of a nest,
and one area with cuttings
under the snow.
16 May Barrow to Qaanaq - 75 miles
by wheel gave no lemming
signs and no surface sign -
tracks, holes in snow, etc.
